Antiparos - A Jewel of the Cyclades, Just Beyond Paros

Antiparos Island Guide — Beaches, Cave & Cycladic Beauty - Mykonos Magazine

"Some islands announce themselves with grandeur. Antiparos offers something rarer — a quiet perfection, discovered slowly, on foot, between bougainvillea and sea."

Lying just off the western coast of Paros, Antiparos is one of the Cyclades' most enchanting small islands — close enough to reach in under an hour by private boat from Mykonos, yet far enough removed to feel like a world entirely its own. Along its 60 kilometres of coastline, emerald and sapphire waters lap against beaches of golden sand and secret coves. Narrow cobblestone alleys wind between whitewashed houses draped in bougainvillea, their vivid pinks and purples cascading over walls shaded by eucalyptus trees. The light here is extraordinary, the pace unhurried, and the beauty — effortless.

Chora — The Heart of the Island

The island's sole village, Antiparos Chora, stretches from the port all the way to Sunset Beach, and rewards those who simply wander. At its centre, the medieval Kastro — a fortified square that once protected islanders from Aegean pirates — remains the spiritual heart of the settlement. Around it, a small marketplace, four ancient churches, and a constellation of restaurants, taverns, and bars offer easy pleasures from morning to late evening. Throughout the summer, the village hosts traditional festivals where locals and visitors alike share in music, dance, and the warmth of genuine Cycladic hospitality.

The Cave of Antiparos — Europe's Deepest Secret

Among all of Antiparos's natural wonders, none is more extraordinary than its cave — the only vertical cave in Europe, plunging some 85 metres into the earth. Within its chambers, stalactites and stalagmites of astonishing delicacy have formed over millions of years; the oldest stalactite found here is estimated at 45 million years of age. Yet what makes this place truly singular is its human history. Inscriptions etched into the cave walls record an extraordinary procession of visitors stretching back to the Neolithic period — among them Alexander the Great, King Otto, the French ambassador the Marquis de Nointel, and the lyric poet Archilochus of Paros. To descend into this cave is to move through geological and human time at once.

The Beaches — From Golden Shores to Hidden Coves

Antiparos offers a beach for every temperament. Sunset Beach, within a short walk from the main square, lives up to its name with serene crystal waters, golden sand, and a setting perfectly suited to a romantic evening dinner. Agios Georgios, on the island's southern shore, is perhaps the finest beach of all — shallow, crystalline, and framed by welcoming taverns for those seeking shade and sustenance as the afternoon deepens.

Glyfa, facing east towards Paros, is a family favourite — its calm sapphire waters and natural shade from scattered trees making it an ideal retreat for a long, unhurried day. Soros, one of the more popular shores, offers sunbeds, umbrellas, and further east, a series of quieter coves for those in search of solitude. And for those who value absolute privacy above all, Kako Rema — sheltered from the winds and little known even to frequent visitors — offers the kind of stillness that is increasingly rare.

The most intimate of them all, however, may be Faneromeni — a tiny cove barely large enough for a handful of guests, a twenty-minute drive from Chora, with no sunbeds or service of any kind. Just glassy, perfectly clear water, an almost sacred quiet, and a small whitewashed church at the water's edge. The kind of place one does not easily forget.
